My project on female representation feels especially important at this moment. I’m a member of a Facebook group for female technicians. As I scroll through the posts in the group, I’m overwhelmed by the number of posts providing learning opportunities while the theater world is dark. These opportunities are giving a platform for technicians to connect while we’re home. The group has always empowered female technicians, but, in this moment, the group is doing an especially wonderful job of providing a safe space for female technicians to share themselves.
With that said, my senior project is providing me with a light while I cannot be at technical theater. I have quite a bit of research to do for my project. I’ve read through many of the sources, but I need to take notes. It takes me quite a long time to read because the stories are oftentimes quite disturbing and worrisome. I frequently take breaks to process all that I have read. Now that I’ve read the information, I think it’ll be easier for me to take notes so I can write my paper.
I had my interview with a professional in the field today. I interviewed Jesse Gaffney about her experiences in technical theater, creating a culture of empowerment, and family support for technicians. I’m interviewing Ms. Cates and Ms. Whalen on Monday. These interviews will help me connect the issue to the Galloway theater community if I choose to do so.
I’m in the process of brainstorming new artifact ideas as my previous idea cannot be executed due to tech not occuring. I found these animations that I love. I’m working on brainstorming ways I can create something like this with the female techies at Galloway. All of the female technicians are so different. I would love to show off our unique personalities while celebrating our accomplishments. I’m going to reach out to the female technicians once I solidify my idea. I’d love for my artifact to respond to what I write with snippets of successes for female technicians in technical theater. I think this idea allows me to put a positive spin on my paper.
